Building

Building Codes were designed to prevent substandard building methods in the construction industry.  Many building codes have been updated and adopted after tragedy happened where people were killed or injured and property was lost or damaged.  This is why municipalities require most building projects to have a permit for the work.  Some people may think permits are a waste of time and money, however they save lives!

We are often asked “Why do I need a permit?”  The short answer is to be sure what you are building is safe and secure according to the building codes.

There are also positive reasons a building permit can benefit you as a homeowner.

It will keep your contractor honest, and promote a competitive price.  Many times work can be hidden behind walls or under floors, and a building permit will require the use of safe methods and materials.  Inspections assure your contractor abides by those codes.

It guides your do-it-yourself project.  Not everyone is handy in all trades, or happen to know all building practices.  When you get your permit, you have to review your plans with the building department.  If they ask you to revise your plans, it is for your safety.

It keeps your insurance valid.  If you build without a permit, your insurance company may not honor your policy.  A fire resulting from work without a permit may not always be covered.

It adds value when you sell your home.  The permit process is a public record, and potential buyers are checking with the Village what permits have been obtained.

The Village of Poplar Grove takes building inspection very seriously.  We want to be sure your family is safe and secure. If you have questions regarding any permits or the process, please contact our inspectors.  Our goal is to keep our residents safe!
